Chirp
Welcome to Chirp! Chirp is a slightly altered remix of the MIT-Scratch IDE, adding the following set of features:
- export / import of scripts as XML
- change blocks through the context menu
- scroll the IDE-window in low-res situations
- enlarge the scripting pane
- Windows installer to directly launch projects in presentation mode
- use projects as Windows screensavers
- distribute Scratch projects as stand-alone exe-files
The Chirp changeset was written by Jens Moenig.
Projects created or edited with Chirp are fully compatible with Scratch v. 1.2.1 and with the Scratch website.
The name Chirp alludes to a turntablist's technique known as a "Baby Scratch". it also indicates a food-chain: Chirp may be consumed by Scratch.
How to use it
Windows: First install Scratch 1.2.1, then Chirp.
uninstall: uninstalling Chirp will not affect Scratch
Others: "Chirp.remix" is a Squeak image file, which can be launched by dropping it onto the Scratch virtual machine (Schratch.exe or Scratch.app).
Source code is included. Please refer to the enclosed license for further details.
Setting up the Chirp screensaver
The Windows installer adds a screensaver named "Chirp" to the list of available screensavers, which can be activated in the Windows control panel. It will run a random project from the Scratch-projects folder each time it runs.
The Chirp "Fake" Compiler
An experimental prototype to "convert" a Scratch project into a stand-alone executable can be found in a separate download named "ChirpCompiler".
